Regulations of the open category A1, A2, A3 for unmanned pilots.

About the category

Civil Aviation Authority - the Civil Aviation Authority website contains official information about drone regulations.

Operations in the Open category apply primarily to most recreational flights and low-risk commercial activities. They do not require prior flight permission from the Civil Aviation Authority.

Operations in the Open category may only be conducted within the visual line of sight of the pilot or observer, at a distance of no more than 120 meters from the nearest point of the ground, with drones weighing no more than 25 kg.

As a drone operator, remember to check if you are required to register.

After registration, you must affix your operator number to each drone.

The Open category is further divided into three subcategories – A1, A2, and A3 – which can be summarized as follows:

A1: Fly over people, but not over gatherings of people;
A2: Fly close to people. The minimum horizontal distance from people is 30 m, or 5 m if the drone has a speed limiting feature;

A3: Fly away from people. The minimum horizontal distance from residential, commercial, industrial, or recreational areas is 150 m.

Each subcategory has its own set of requirements. Therefore, in the open category, it is important to determine the subcategory of operations to which your flights will fall, which rules apply to you, and the type of training you must complete as an UAS pilot.
